The eye is the only place to view the blood vessels in the body without needing to cut you open. Looking in a small pupil is like looking through a keyhole to see into a room. With dilating the pupils it is like opening up the door allowing a much better view inside. The following article is provided by  WebMD discussing what pupil dilation is and why we perform this vital test. We usually recommend this at least every two years on adults up to 60 years of age then yearly after that, unless of course there is ocular disease which could require increasing the frequency of dilation.

The comprehensive eye examination is the mainstay of eyecare performed by eye doctors. It is more than just an exam for glasses. It includes determining eyeglasses prescription, assessment of binocular function, as well as a thorough evaluation of ocular health. An often asked question is does insurance cover the dilation of pupils and the answer is yes, this is included in the cost of a comprehensive examination for no additional charge.Drs. McConnaughey, Ballard, and Andre offer the most thorough eye exams in Hillsboro and the highest quality designer glasses in Hillsboro.

We are also available after hours for emergencies; just call the office to reach the doctor on call.

The eyes and vision of children are just as important as that of adults. The visual system is developing until about the age of 8. During this critical time period the eye is forming connections to the brain which if impaired can cause lifelong decreases in vision. Risk factors for a lazy eye as well as any ocular disease should be uncovered as young as possible to give them the best chance of good vision. Most of these risk factors can easily be ignored by a child since they would just think it is normal for them and have no symptoms which is why most of the time children do not complain about their vision especially before they are school age. Another interesting fact is that 80% of a child's learning is through vision. Call to schedule your child's exam today.

Contact lens technology has improved dramatically over the last several years. There are now lenses that correct astigmatism, presbyopia(trouble focusing at near), hyperopia(far-sightedness), and myopia(near-sightedness). There are improved lubricating agents, solutions, and materials to improve comfort so most people can wear contact lenses successfully. Ask about contact lenses at your next comprehensive examination.

There are many eye diseases that can be without symptoms until the advanced stages such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. We also treat eye diseases which cause significant discomfort such as dry eye syndrome and allergic conjunctivitis. We use state of the art equipment such as a Humphrey visual field analyzer and Optovue iCam retinal camera to diagnose and monitor eye diseases. A thorough ocular health assessment is included in every comprehensive examination.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgeries performed today. With this surgery the natural lens which has clouded up and is obstructing vision is removed and replaced with a clear intraocular lens. We work with all area cataract surgeons to perform a post-operative exam to determine the final glasses prescription after the surgery and to check the health of the eye after surgery.

Another commonly treated problem in our practice is the removal of foreign bodies from the cornea or conjunctiva. If you have a foreign body call right away and we will remove it and get you feeling better right away. One piece of advice is to call sooner rather than later as most foreign bodies do not resolve or come out on their own and the longer you wait the more rust that will be in the eye that has to be removed along with the metal since the eye becomes inflamed readily to the rust alone. The following article is provided by allaboutvision.com and describes foreign bodies as well as other injuries.

There are various causes of red eyes. Most are inflammatory in nature but there are also a lot of allergic, viral, and bacterial red eyes as well. Each different type of red eye requires a different treatment and we are vastly experienced at treating red eyes.
